Citation Management with Zotero

Annotate & Highlight PDFs

Zotero doesn't support in-system annotation and highlighting, but you can use third party tools for this task, such as the free tool, Adobe Acrobat Reader. Or if you have access to an Adobe Acrobat Pro subscription, you can choose to use that application instead.

1.  Make sure Adobe Acrobat Reader is installed.

2.  Set your preferences for each browser you use, so that PDFs open with Adobe Reader

3.  Open up your PDF from you library. It should give you the option to open in Reader.

4.  Click the Comment tab to open the annotating and highlighting tools.

5.  Click Save.

6. You'll be asked if you want to replace the file. Choose Yes.

*For Chrome, you may also have to make these additional browser Settings:

  1. Go to the 3 dots in the upper right corner
  2. Click Settings
  3. Scroll down and click Advanced
  4. Under Privacy and security, click Content settings
  5. Scroll down and click PDF documents
  6. Turn ON: Download PDF files instead of automatically opening them in Chrome
