NPS Archive: Calhoun

Calhoun can provide a list of "most popular" items, by times read, or by times downloaded.

Examples:

• Most popular tech reports from the past year
• Most popular Theses and Dissertations of all time
• Top Ten "Most Popular Items" in NPS Archive: Calhoun

Any search in Calhoun will produce a link to a results set that you can use and share, or publish on web pages.  

Once you have the results set you want, just copy the link in the brower's url window and use it where you would use any other link.  

Here are some examples: 

• Everything in Calhoun that shows a name as author, most recent first
  • Try using your own last name
  • Use the Sort By Settings dropdown to sort results by Date Issued Descending
• Any title that contains the phrase, "Additive Manufacturing"
  • Try using  any phrase "in quotes" to retain the word order and spelling
  • Use the Sort By Settings dropdown to sort results by Date Issued Descending
• Everything a department has published
  • What about just the published articles?
  • What about Theses and Dissertations by one department?
     
• List all Outstanding NPS Theses, in reverse chronological order
• Which theses did Gary Kildall advise? (use any advisor name)

Caveats: Results always depend on whether the information needed is reported in the record. Search-based links can be quite long.

NOTE about author names: records in Calhoun display a name as it appears on the document. If you would like to have your name appear in a specific way for all of your records in Calhoun, contact the Calhoun Manager.

How to find this feature:

From Calhoun's main page, look on the left under Statistics for Most Popular Items. On that page, adjust the number of results, the collection to search and the period of time to measure. You will see a breakdown of File Downloads and Item Views by country.

Each item record in Calhoun includes statistics about use (views, downloads). In Calhoun item record, scroll down a bit to see "Show Statistical Information" to see statistics about any record.
