NPS Guidance on Generative AI

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes integrated into military and professional life, developing AI literacy is increasingly essential. Familiarizing yourself with generative AI tools and their capabilities can help you become more proficient in utilizing AI technology in general.

ChatGPT, Bing AI, and Bard are natural language processing models, a type of generative AI trained on large datasets of text. Through exposure to training data, they learn patterns that allow them to generate novel content similar in style and structure.

Many students are excited about AI technology but concerned about if and how to use it in academic work. Interim guidance released by the NPS Office of the Provost is your first step to better understanding NPS expectations for use of generative AI.

Stood up in February 2022 by integrating the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC), Defense Digital Services (DDS), the Chief Data Officer, and the enterprise platform Advana into one organization, the CDAO is building a strong foundation for data, analytic, and AI-enabled capabilities to be developed and fielded at scale. Part of this foundation is ensuring the Department has the necessary people, platforms, and processes needed to continuously provide business leaders and warfighters with agile solutions.

Dr. Rodrigo Nieto-Gomez (Research Assistant Professor, National Security Affairs) asserts that writing term papers or replacing Google might be the least interesting things that consumer language models can do and demonstrates ChatGPT's potential to provide persona-centered perspectives and generate custom scenarios.

Copyright and Artificial Intelligence

In early 2023, the Copyright Office launched an initiative to examine the copyright law and policy issues raised by artificial intelligence (AI) technology, including the scope of copyright in works generated using AI tools and the use of copyrighted materials in AI training. After convening public listening sessions and hosting public webinars to gather and share information about current technologies and their impact, the Office published a notice of inquiry in the Federal Register in August 2023.
